Upgrading Your Laptop Hardware for Better Performance in the Ultraportable Age

Upgrading a desktop computer is relatively easy because it has a lot of space and nearly all of its components are replaceable. However, doing the same with your laptop is a difficult proposition, though still possible. Laptops are compact and many of their components are fixed.

What you can and can’t upgrade

Here are some of the things that you can upgrade in your laptop from a shop for computer maintenance Bishops Stortford:

  • Hard drive or SSD (storage)
  • RAM (memory)
  • Optical drive (DVD or Blu Ray)
  • battery
Here is what you cannot upgrade:
  • Display
  • Motherboard
  • USB ports
In some laptops you can actually upgrade the display, but with most thin laptops the display is glued to the form factor and changing the display will make it look worse.

Upgrading storage

Storage is the most common upgrade that people make for their laptops. Here are your options:
  • If your hard drive is slow, you can opt for an SSD which is more than 5 times faster, but also more expensive
  • If you need more storage space, you can upgrade to a higher capacity hard drive
Soldered components

Some laptops do not come with optical drives, so they cannot be added as there is simply no space. There are cases where you cannot upgrade even storage or RAM because they are soldered on to the motherboard to save space. If you have such a laptop, you pretty much have zero upgrade options. The only way to avoid problems with your laptop then is to replace it with a new one.

If your laptop is under warranty, you can get it changed from the manufacturer. If not, then you can choose a service for computer maintenance Bishops Stortford. Most upgrades are not very expensive beyond the cost of the new components themselves.
